Why should I trust the Bible?
The Bible is a unique book. It is God's written communication to mankind. It is actually a collection of 66 different books written by around 40 different authors. They range from farmers, a fisherman, a doctor, a tax collector to kings and prophets. The earliest writings were over 1400 years BC to the latest in AD 80.
Jesus Christ believed the Bible to be the authoritative Word of God. He recognised the authority of the Old Testament, quoting from it constantly. The Bible itself claims that it is inspired by God. In a court of law the defendant's own testimony is important. It makes the claim that each of its writers were moved by God to pen the words they wrote (2 Peter 1:20-21).
The whole of the Bible has an amazing unity from beginning to end. It reveals an Almighty God who made a perfect world for His creatures to enjoy but tragically it has been spoiled by sin. Through the plan of salvation, which God has accomplished in His Son Jesus Christ, sinners like us can be restored to a right relationship with our Creator.
Remarkable prophecies in the Old Testament back up its claims to be utterly trustworthy. There are at least 50 references in the New Testament, which is the actual fulfilment of Old Testament prophecies concerning Christ. The following are a few examples of predictions made hundreds of years before Jesus was born:
Micah 5:2, which tells us that Christ was to be born in Bethlehem. Luke 2:4-7 gives us the fulfilment.
|
Isaiah 7:14 says that Christ was to be born of a virgin. Luke 1:26-31 again gives the fulfilment. |
|
Zechariah 12:10 tells us Christ's hands would be pierced. In John 19:34-37 this is fulfilled. |
|
Isaiah 53:5 tells us that He would suffer for others. See Romans 5:8 in the New Testament. |
The Bible is the most truthful book in the world. It doesn't try to cover up the faults and sins of some of its principal characters. It shows us that we are sinners too. We have failed to reach God's perfect standard. That is why we need a Saviour!
The Bible is God's guide book for life. We neglect it at our peril. Despite many attempts to destroy it down through the centuries, the Bible not only exists today, but also is still the best-selling book in the world!
